Math Unit: Fractions

In your child's class, we are starting a math unit on fractions. In this unit, students will:

• Model, compare, and order fractions
• Explore and work with improper fractions and mixed numbers
• Add, subtract, and multiply fractions
• Equally divide fractions

Fractions are common in our world. For example, prices on a grocery store flyer and store sale announcements often have fractions. Please encourage your child to look for and use fractions at home. 

If you are cutting up food items at home, have your child name the fractions that describe the pieces and practice diving something into equal parts. For example, if an orange is divided into 8 equal pieces one part is 1/8 and can equally divided amongst 2, 4 or 8 people.
